TEST FORMAT

A candidate has to take the Listening, Reading and Writing tests all on the same day one after the other, with no breaks in between them. Test order is same for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training tests. They are always taken in the following order.

Listening :

  • Total 40 minutes; 30 minutes for listening to four recorded monologues and conversation and 10 minutes extra to transfer your answers from your question booklet to your answer sheet. There are 40 questions in all to be answered to.
  • Note that the content of the Listening test is the same for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training tests.

Reading :

  • One hour test comprising of three long reading passages and containing 40 questions in all.
  • The content of the Reading test is different for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training tests.

Writing :

  • It is one hour test comprising of two writing tasks. The first writing task is a shorter one as compared to the second task which is almost twice as long as that of writhing task one. Note that Task Two contributes twice as much as Task One to the Writing score.
  • The writing test tasks are different for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training tests.

Speaking :

  • Speaking test is either given after a break on the same day as the other three tests, or up to seven days before or after that. It depends on your test centre. This test is a face-to-face conversation with an examiner appointed by your IELTS test centre. It is in three parts and may long 12-15 minutes.
  • The IELTS Speaking test is the same for both the IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training test candidates.

BAND SCORE

A candidate is given a score from 1 to 9 for each module of the test (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking).

Scores are given in whole or half bands such as 5.0, 6.0, 7.0 or 5.5, 6.5, 7.5 bands in each module.

The average of scores in all modules produces your overall band score.
