Being in an English medium school is the one thing we can all relate to and so communicating with English as a medium comes to us easily, safely said, more naturally than the Urdu counterpart. However when it comes to using these natural skills, with association of the name IELTS attached to it which act as milestone in our foreign affair , things get complex, painful and frustrating as we force ourselves to write an entire dictionary in the form of an essay and follow some preset models which don’t serve to our cause. Therefore the target of this post is to provide widespread and easily adoptable ponder points which can act as guidelines for various situations we often find ourselves dealing with in the dreaded writing task two of the IELTS writing module.
Okay so coming to business, there are a handful of tips which will guide you in preparation for writing an essay worthy of scoring 9 bands in your writing module:
- First and foremost is, to analyze the question that has been given to you. Decide what you are asked of and what is demanded from you; for example, when dealing with a cause and solution essay it is expected from you to discuss both the aspects of the question, which secure marks in your Task Response.
- Second that comes in line is the important process of brainstorming, which is basically getting your ideas organised so that you can maintain a flow in your writing and your essay doesn’t appear as a mere splatter of words on a page rather an arrangement of logically connected sentences with the next sentence supporting the previous one thus maintaining the smooth transition of ideas. This very technique will help you in securing marks for Cohesion and Coherence in your writing, adding more to your cause of high score.
- Then comes the task of writing. Most of us believe in the myth of using difficult words as insurance of high marks; however, the real picture is far simpler. You don’t need to use fancy words for transporting your ideas as it usually results in a writer’s block: the situation where you are stuck and are unable to discuss the topic further. Therefore it is wiser to stick to what you know, that is using words which you use in your daily conversations (obviously in English) in a more formal manner as it’s the marking criteria for Lexical Resources.
- The last checkpoint for having a successful writing journey is using correct grammar. No matter how well an essay covers the above-mentioned points, if the fundamental such as grammar is murky, don’t expect to get a higher band by any means, as its not only the fundamental requirement for mastering a language, but also the only source that brings logic to your usage of language for communication either by speaking or writing . Therefore closely observe your essay for ruling out grammatical errors.
Thus to conclude, rely on your basic understanding of writing and rules attached with them at the same time polishing and molding these unaccounted skills( which you surely posses )according to the targeted criteria mentioned in my previous posts.
